Potty training = failing

Written by amanda on January 19, 2010 – 7:35 am -

Its not going well. #1 is alright and he’ll do it without much of a fuss, but he hates being interrupted to have to go potty. #2 is a whole other story. He REFUSES to let himself poop on the potty. He had a little accident in his underwear this morning because when he lays down he can poop… UHG… I don’t understand it. He won’t LET himself come even close to pooping on the potty. I’ve been trying fiberbars, juice and all water and you’d think he wouldn’t be able to keep it in but its not working. Any advice from readers out there?

My daughter will poop on her potty if I time it right. But INEVITABLY she poops at naptime and bedtime (after she's in bed). I think they just get so relaxed in bed that it just happens. Still, I think getting him to go on the potty is the first step. Mine gets big props for doing it in the potty (a cheer, a high five, and 2 m&ms). She beams with pride.
If he is really afraid to do it on the potty, I have read of moms even letting them sit on the potty with their diaper on as a first step and then cutting a whole in the the diaper as a second step. Sounds drastic, but just a suggestion. Good luck.
  • I've heard about suspending a diaper in the toilet. I'm not sure that's his problem, but I'd be willing to try. He just doesn't like the sensation of sitting to poop. My mom has had good luck with telling children, "Tell me when you have to go poop and we'll get a diaper for you." Then they tell her and she say, "Let's go sit on the potty and I'll get you a diaper. Then she goes around the corner and waits. She says they have to let it out after a little bit and then get used to doing it that way and forget about diapers.
